Breaking Boundaries in STEM: ROCOL’s Jess Baker Featured in Lubes’n’Greases

Events

We’re proud to share that Jess Baker, Senior Scientist at ROCOL, was recently featured in the April 2025 edition of Lubes’n’Greases, a respected industry publication known for its insightful coverage of developments in the global lubricants sector.

In a special feature exploring the evolving role of women in technical fields, Jess offered a candid and inspiring look into her journey through the STEM world, her experiences in industrial chemistry, and her growing leadership at Rocol.

A Career Sparked by Curiosity

Jess’s passion for science began early, nurtured by a strong educational environment and the influence of a dedicated chemistry teacher. “I always enjoyed science and maths,” she recalls. “But it was one-on-one time with a teacher who helped things ‘click’ that really changed everything.” That support helped pave the way for her decision to pursue chemistry at university—despite limited awareness at the time of the broad career opportunities it could unlock.

During her studies, Jess secured an industrial placement at a coatings company—her first taste of hands-on chemistry outside the classroom. “I absolutely loved my year there and knew I wanted to work in an industrial setting,” she says. That decision ultimately led her to ROCOL, where she continues to thrive.

Rising Through the Ranks at ROCOL

Since joining ROCOL, Jess has been involved in a number of high-impact projects, including the development of a PFAS-free food-grade lubricant range. “It’s been amazing to see a project through from start to finish and even take it out of the lab to promote it,” she explains. “I’ve never worked somewhere that trusted someone in a technical role to represent a product in that way—it’s been incredibly rewarding.”

She also spoke about the culture at ROCOL that fosters growth and innovation. “Across the leadership team, there’s a real effort to support employees and help them progress. I’ve felt seen and supported here—especially by my previous manager, who’s still a fantastic mentor even after my recent promotion.”

Championing Diversity in STEM

While Jess acknowledges ongoing challenges in the industry—such as the lack of awareness among young students about where a STEM degree can lead—she’s also quick to highlight the triumphs. “My promotion was unexpected but incredibly validating,” she says. “It’s also been great to have a small team I can now mentor and develop myself.”

As one of many women helping to change the face of industrial science, Jess is also becoming a voice of encouragement for others. “It’s great to be recognised as a success story that might inspire others. I’d love for more women to see this industry as a space where they can belong and thrive.”

Looking Ahead

Jess and the team at ROCOL are currently working on innovative new technologies, including PFAS-free lubricants, sustainable formulations, and advanced metalworking fluids—all with a strong focus on performance, safety, and regulatory compliance.

“We want ROCOL to lead from the front,” Jess says. “Whether that’s accreditations, sustainability, or pioneering new chemistries, we’re always listening to our customers and pushing boundaries.”

Final Words of Advice

When asked what advice she would offer young women considering a STEM career, Jess didn’t hesitate:

“Talk to people already in the field. Ask questions. Seek experience. And don’t let the fact that something is male-dominated hold you back—there’s space for everyone, and the industry is better for it when that space is shared.”

We’d like to thank Lubes’n’Greases for spotlighting Jess’s story.
