WHAT CAUSES CORROSION?
Atmospheric corrosion is an electrochemical process which affects metal surfaces through reaction with moisture and salts in the atmosphere.
As well as being unsightly, corrosion can significantly reduce the strength and service life of that metal. Corrosion is a particularly problematic issue in coastal regions and in the marine environment as salt will accelerate this process.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ASSETS AGAINST ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE
1. To prevent corrosion, the chemical reaction must be stopped or slowed down. This could be through:
- Removal of the electrolytes.
- Providing a sacrificial cathodic metal layer.
- Creating a barrier between the metal surface and the atmosphere.
2. Rinse with fresh water (if possible) to remove salt and other contamination
- Ensure no pooling of water where possible.
3. For temporary protection:
- Use a water-displacing corrosion preventative such as Z30 or BIOGEN Spray to provide a resistant barrier against salt spray and humidity.
- Spray, dip or paint, ensuring a thorough and even coating.
4. For permanent cathodic protection:
- Make sure the surface to be protected is clean and dry.
- Use a cleaner such as ROCOL INDUSTRIAL CLEANER RAPID DRY.
- Apply a zinc-rich spray such as ROCOL COLD GALVANISING Spray, ensuring an even coating, allow to dry.
5. Inspect equipment regularly (monthly or according to maintenance schedule) to provide peace of mind that your assets are fully protected, mission ready and primed for mobilisation.
